======About the concept======
Delhi, with communities representing several ethnicities and religions, has always been a melting pot of cultures. On DilliNet - an online meeting place for expatriates in Delhi - there's even more complexity.
There are communities within a community - Asians, Africans, Australians, Americans from both South, Cental and Noth America, Europeans. Every community has it's own tradition and it's own celebrations. We want to give them the chance to celebrate them while away from home and at the same time - present these traditions to Delhities.
=======The Carnival ========
The origins of carnival date back to the ancient Greek spring festival in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine. The Romans adopted the celebration with Bacchanalia, and Saturnalia, where slaves and their masters would exchange clothes in a day of drunken revelry. It quickly evolved into a massive celebration of indulgences - one last gasp of music, food, alcohol, and sex before Lent - before the 40 days of personal reflection, abstinence, and fasting until Easter (not exactly what the Church probably had in mind).The word itself comes from Latin, "Carne Vale" or "Farewell to the Flesh".Today, the Carnival is celebrated everywhere from Europe to South America, from Venice to Rio and is now coming to New Delhi!
