DIVYANJALI

This is an Odissi recital by Jaya Mehta and Swaati Vivek, in the Guru Surendra Nath Jena style of performance. A dynamic style, inspired and enriched by the temple sculptures of Orissa such as the Lingaraj, Jagannath Puri, Konark and Chausatha Yogini temples, derivative of arts such as jatra theatre, patachitra scrolls, tala patra paintings, and Oriya literary texts, this style of Odissi reverberates with both the tandava and lasya elements, in contrast to the other lasya-biased Odissi styles.

APRIL 15: MOVIE: WATER FOR ELEPHANTS

Jacob Jankowski is a medical student. While still at college, his parents are killed; and so, he abandons his studies, and leaps onto a passing train. He finds himself lost for options, until he falls in with a traveling circus, doing one night shows at one small town after another. This being the Great Depression, there is no constant work to be found, and so he finds himself moving with the circus, and given his almost completed veterinary degree, he his put in charge of the circus menagerie. Along the way, he meets the beautiful Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the animal trainer - charismatic, but twisted. He also meets Rosie the elephant, who seems entirely un-trainable and intractable - until Jacob finds a way to get through to her. The movie tells a love story in a time of incredible difficulty, both financial and practical.

The movie stars Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, and Cristoph Waltz, and was directed by Francis Lawrence.
